We have been establishing community and serving tjhe poor, dominican and haitians in the Dominican Repulic for 2 years now. But we have not been able to buy a house so we can better serve the poor and anyone who is marginalized. we will call this house, Dorothy Day house. We have found a house for sale for 70,000 dollars.
Dorothy day is considered one of the greatest social justice activists of the 20th century in the united states. She founded the houses of hospitality in nyc 80 years ago. These houses today are more than 300 around the world. Every house is different.
But in most houses volunteers live with homeless people. Creating a community were volunteers serve the homeless but were the volunteers learn from the homeless. Many of the homeless as you know we work with are children and elderly. The Dorothy Day house in Dominican Republic will always be open so homeless people who do not live in the house can use the facilities and recieve services from profesional volunteers and non profesional volunteers.
Most of our work is donde in the streets, as outreach. and even if we buy a house,we will continue to serve in the streets. But Having a house will allow us to better serve. We imagine the house as more than a shelter. A space were profesionals and artists can come together with the poor, no matter the sexual orientation, religion or belief.
A space were everyone is welcome, especially those who are discminated against
Regarding services. It depends on our volunteers. Artists, profesionals and non profesional, Social workers who as volunteers will provide services for the homeless at the house.
